We're the premiere academic journal in science education research. The cover design is for a special issue on undergraduate science teaching, which is also a pilot for a spin-off journal focusing on college-level science teaching.
Cover format is 10 in x 6.75 in portrait layout at 300dpi CMYK. With spine (optional), 10in x 7in.

This is the cover for a special issue of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching (JRST) which is a pilot for a spin-off journal focusing on Discipline-Based Educational Research (DBER). The DBER community are university-based scientists working in science departments who have a strong interest in undergraduate science education and promote innovation and research to improve science teaching at colleges and universities.
The DBER community is proud of its roots in the science departments, so the design should embody the notion that this is a journal for scientists.
The DBER community is heavily involved in educational innovation, and the notion of hands-on, active, authentic engagement of college-level students with scientific practices should be incorporated. No 500-person lecture halls.
The focus of the Journal is on educational research - actually proving that innovations in teaching have effects on student learning or whether they successfully pursue science majors. Incorporating some element of research-on-teaching would be nice.
The cover should in some way incorporate the JRST brand identity (see attached recent copies of the Journal), but should not be a duplicate of the current JRST cover layout. This is meant to be a pilot for a spin-off Journal that retains the Journal of Research in Science Teaching identity, but is the Discipline-Based Educational Research Journal.

JRST brand identity must be incorporated in some way, as the block-letter JRST logo (Adobe Lithos Bold or related font family).
"Special Issue" must be incorporated in some way.
Focus should be on "Discipline-Based Educational Research".
Journal identifying information must be included in some way:
1) Volume 50, Issue 6, August 2013, ISSN 0022-4308
2) Wiley-Blackwell logo
3) "The Official Journal of NARST"
4) text following NARST ("A worldwide Organization...") is optional.
Incorporation of photographs or artwork adherent to the iStockPhoto standard contract is acceptable, but core design elements should not be from outside sources. See attached recent Journal covers for examples of incorporation of stock photo art.
