Favored imagines what life might have been like for Joseph and Mary as the two grow up, how their relationship comes to be, and the challenges that confront them and their families in the town of Nazareth. The young man and woman face unbearable difficulties when they trust in God’s plan for their lives.
During the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar, the people of the small town of Nazareth are commonly persecuted by Syrians—soldiers conscripted into the Roman army and who despise the Jews. One deputy commander, Hasid, is particularly cruel to the townsfolk, and never misses an opportunity to torment and mock them.
Mary, the daughter of Joachim and Anna, is introduced as a little girl, a few years Joseph’s younger. She does not yet fully understand God, but enjoys her innocent “conversations” with Him at night, and she plays a game with a gentle wind that she sometimes hears as it blows through the trees. Even in her teenage years, as she enters into a loving relationship with Joseph, Mary still encounters the mysterious breeze at times. Little does she realize that it foreshadows something miraculous that is to occur.
Mary and Joseph are eventually betrothed, but their happiness is interrupted by seeming infidelity on Mary’s part. While Joseph contemplates what to do, in time the truth becomes clear to Rabbi Asa—a wise man, and friend and confidant of Joseph and others—who one day, reading the writings of Isaiah, suddenly realizes that what is unfolding is the fulfillment of a prophecy.
Always around to stir up trouble is Zillah, the venomous town gossip. And lurking in the shadows is Zaddu, an ancient crone who has given her soul to the devil, and does his bidding in exchange for longevity and power.
