What do you do?

I am a writer. Looking for a design for my ebook cover - which will also be on a hard copy very quickly following the ebook release.

How many pages of print design do you need?

one

List the size requirement(s) for your print design

This book cover will be visible on Amazon.com. So, small, about the size of a postage stamp. I will also use the cover on hard copies of a paperback book for Create Space.

What is your industry?

Publishing and Media

Describe the target audience for your print design

The target reader is 27-60 years old, and a fan of literary fiction.
The book is NOT: Chick Lit or Romance. These are people who read books, whether on an e-reader or in hard copy. Think serious current fiction.

What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your print design?

I want to portray that this book is a serious piece of fiction. Think work by Jodi Picoult, Margaret Atwood, Louise Erdrich, Joanna Trollope, Barbara Kingsolver, Anna Quindlen.

What print design styles do you like?

I like color that will pop on the Amazon page. I'd like to see something suggestive of a story with some ominous elements, while beauty and joy are still present. I'd like the title to be the most visible element, in a large font. Font can be creative as long as it is legible.

What colors do you want to see in your print design?

I like apple green, emerald (pantone 2013), lavender, cobalt, metallics.

What colors do you NOT want to see in your print design?

No Red.

What adjectives should best describe your print design?

Clean, contemporary. If using a female form or fashion elements, those need to reflect the American 1930s.

How will you use the print design?

Ebook cover, then Create Space hard copy book cover

What content must be included in the print design?

Title of book: THAT KIND OF GIRL

Author of book: Christy Ogilvie

Please include something evocative of a female nature, with duality. A good girl OR a bad girl, or... BOTH.

I want to share the blurb for the story to help direct your thinking:

Book title: THAT KIND OF GIRL

After a tragic house fire, Maggie Cameron seeks out her wayward son in Chicago. Her granddaughters haven’t seen their father in ten years. An unsettling reunion just in time for Christmas, 1933, forces the Cameron women to face ever more disturbing challenges.

A story told in several voices: Maggie Cameron, widowed daughter of well-to-do Welsh immigrants; Margaret, her eldest granddaughter, whose adolescent struggles are magnified by the sinister secret she carries; Elizabeth, Margaret’s sister, a talented and popular beauty brimming with optimism; Tom, Maggie’s son, sullen and disappointed in middle age, having settled for less than he believes life owes him; Kathleen, common law stepdaughter to Tom; and Johnny Gillespie, a tender-hearted Irish immigrant trapped in the Chicago outfit. Fiona provides a window to the future.

Blurred boundaries, psychic visions and unspeakable secrets call for desperate solutions.

My image for the cover, personally, involves a composite of Margaret and Kathleen - who face similar challenges with drastically different results. Specifically, Margaret survives sexual abuse, going on to live a wonderful life; and Kathleen succumbs, first to life in a brothel, second, to death. She's murdered by Tom Cameron. (Giving it all away here)

I hope this helps give you an image. I'm really enjoying the input so far!
