I am a young author-to-be, currently writing my first epic fantasy novel which I intend to self-publish in late February/early March 2013. This first book, 'Buan - The Perfect Mortals', is currently in the editing process, and needs a front cover design to go with it. I have a website on www.reecebridger.com as well as facebook and twitter, accessible from the site.
A cover spread, (front, spine, back).
8.5 inches from top to bottom (front face)
5.5 inches from left to right (front face)
0.9 inches up (spine)
The book I'm currently looking to self-publish is intended for people of all ages 15+, so young adult+. The book is epic/dark fantasy, and contains elements of magic, some philosophy, mystery and other themes.
I'd like to convey the genre of the book, as well as the style and some of the themes. There needs to be some sort of signature about the cover; not literally a signature like an autograph, but more some element of the style that makes people see it and think 'This was written by this guy!' For an example of what I mean, search for books written by Ben Galley; don't literally copy that style, but that sort of stylised design that is original and unique.
The style that fits this book is one that's suitably fantasy-ish, and conveys a sort of mystery/darkness about it. Most of the cover is dominated by already-conceived images anyway, so its up to any artist who wants to try to see what they come up with.
I imagine this design would use the following colours: browns, some blacks, greys, silvers/golds, and some shades of white; red may also fit in there, in places, but not as much as the others.
Anything other than what was already said.
Mysterious, eye-catching, fantasy, iconic, dark.
I will use it as a full cover spread for my book, which should be available in paperback, hardback, eBooks and Kindle books, and some other forms. I will also use it on my website, as well as the website's general motif, along with business cards, promotional materials, and possibly merchandise. It is likely that I will give the accepted artist the first offer of any and all further works in the series.
There are two pictures that I have had designed that will go into the cover: a design of a butterfly on a falchion, (it's a kind of curved sword,) and a map. The pictures will be attached in the project. I'll give a sort of piece-by-piece analysis of what I'd like here, since the images are all in black and white.
The most important part of this is that the butterfly is a rather iconic part of the story, as is the falchion in some ways. The butterfly needs to coloured a brilliant white, (I mean white as a sheet, or even whiter,) and 'luminescent', as in, glowing. The blade of the sword should look metallic, and thus reflect the light of the butterfly perched on it, with a leather-bound, wooden handle and crossguard. This part of the cover shouldn't be too huge or too tiny, but it should still be the main part of the image.
The image of the butterfly has a map behind it; this is an example map the artist drew with it for me to show how it looked, and not the canon one from the actual book. Attached is the real map, which I drew myself, and this should be the background. I apologise for the low-quality of the art AND the image. The shaded areas of the map are meant to be areas of woodland. The words on the ribbon in the top right are 'C.O. KYLIA J.R.' The C.O. and J.R. parts should be smaller than the KYLIA part. In the middle on the left side, on the path, it says 'To Histaania', (a country in the book.) And at the bottom, along the path, it says 'Merchant's Road'. If you're feeling adventurous, you may notice at the very top of the image, in the map of the city, it says 'The Academy' just under what should look like the start of a set of stone stairs. The internal design of the city should be kept the same, but the way that they are divided into squares can be altered if you think it should be. The colour of the map should be sort of map-like, so coloured almost tea-stain brown, with maybe a few stains if you think they would work. I've included a jpeg and a pdf version of this image, for quality/size differences.
The title of the book is 'BUAN' with the subtitle 'The Perfect Mortals'. This title should be at the top of the cover, perhaps on the left corner so it doesn't cover anything important, (but, of course, that's up to you.) It should be coloured gold or silver, and for a font reference, look on dafont for a font named Brother Tattoo. I imagine it should look something like that, but not exactly. The same should go for my name, 'Reece Bridger', which should go at the bottom in the same colour as the title.
I am giving you artistic freedom with this; if you think it would work better with some of the details, (although a few of them ARE crucial,) being the tiniest bit different, such as the placement of the title/name, then there's really no problem trying. Anything else that isn't listed here is up to you.
