Synopsis

Rich Girrard, a 47 year old software designer, husband and father, lives a happy life in San Diego. When he travels to the Midwest on business for the company he's e half-owner of, he makes a side trip to where his father grew up, the small Indiana town of Belton, where he's shocked to meet an old woman who, prepared for his visit on that particular day, gives him a letter written in 1933 by his grandfather. The letter tells him he will travel back to 1933, and even includes a photograph of the two of them, taken on the very porch he is standing on...in 1933.

The next day, Rich is involved in an auto accident, and wakes up not in 2007, or even 1933, but in 1976, in his teenage body, and finds himself reliving those days, and discovering he is not confined to doing the same things he did last time around. He is able to avoid the pitfalls of prescription drug abuse that sidetracked him the first time around, and tells his first love about his feelings, rather than stay silent like he did the first time. He marries her, learning later that she had died, killed in a drunk driving accident caused by the boyfriend shed had the first time.

Rich, armed with maturity he didn't have the first time, follows another dream and after college, joins the Navy to be a Bomber/Navigator in A6E Intruders, participating in, and getting shot down during the first Gulf War. Molly, his wife from his original timeline is killed in the Saudi barracks attack, so Rich is faced with the realization life is a zero-sum game, and changing things in a way that seems better, often carries unintended consequences

Unlike most stories like this, ”17 Again" and "Peggy Sue Got Married," there is not the theme of "the grass is actually MUCH greener on THIS side of the fence, which you learn when you get to see the OTHER side,” but the statement that all life is gain and loss, and much too complicated drive, so you are better off riding and accepting what comes as best you can, finding the good in the results of what you create.

The story ends with Rich returning to his original timeline after being killed in the war, and during his recovery, experiencing for the first time, bodily time travel, as opposed to the consciousness only travel he experienced after the car crash. The second book will explore what caused his time traveling to begin, and whether or no the two forms have any connection or cause and effect.
