Jazz Fest Poster

I borrowed a little from the Swiss style of design for the type layout found on this poster and then turned away from it by deconstructing the text. I like how this is read from top to bottom and then the eye moves counter clockwise to take in the rest of the info.

I modeled this poster after designs from the sixties in terms of color and composition but as I have said, incorporated elements form the international or Swiss style of design. I enjoy the idea of mixing styles when possible, as long as those styles work together. When they do it makes for interesting results.

I decided not to use white text for this poster, the off whites and yellows of the type help to support the vintage idea, they also tie the color scheme together. Pure white text here would have been too stark.

I used the image of legendary jazz vocalist Billie Holiday for this composition to commemorate the 40th anniversary of her passing.
