Digital Schools of Distinction
Education and Universities
National award that recognises and rewards schools best practice use of ICT to enhance the teaching and learning experience for the benefit of students (aged 5 – 12yrs old).
Digital Schools foster and develop attitudes and skills necessary for students’ to take their place in the workplace of the future.
Digital Schools provide a modern and authentic learning environment for students
The benefits to pupils attending a digital school are essentially twofold:
1. For learners of all ages and abilities, engagement and motivation are key elements, and modern technology provides a range of exciting tools to help engage children in curricular activities. In schools in which technology is effectively integrated, pupils and teachers alike are more stimulated, more interested and more engaged in learning activities. Schools must constantly strive to provide an up-to-date and authentic environment for pupils, one which reflects the reality of everyday lives, where technology continues to play an increasingly prominent part.
2. For the future prosperity of the country, it is essential that pupils are provided with plentiful opportunities to use and interact with a range of technological devices. In the medium to long term, it is vital that our education system fosters and develops the attitudes and skills necessary for pupils to take their place in the workplace of the future, in which computer skills will play an essential part. Ireland cannot become a truly digital society, with a successful digital economy if schools are excluded from technological developments. Recently, the Prime Minister of Ireland referred to Ireland as the "digital island": pupils who attend Digital Schools will be far better prepared to embrace the challenges and possibilities of being a productive member of our society in future years.
