Even though we are going for a modern, sophisticated sensibility, it would be great if we could pay homage to our small town roots. In a sense we are a modern small-town general store.
There are two things that might be fun trying to incorporate into the logo:
(1) Some sort of lighting imagery incorporated into the logo. We are located in an old Southern California Edison building, which is an electric company named after Thomas Edison. So we wanted to honor Edison and we used the word "fixture" as a play on the words "light fixture."
(2) The name of our city which is Uptown Whittier. Perhaps this could be a sub heading somewhere?

- Also forgot to mention that our space is actually very warm industrial chic. We have a lot of wood beams, exposed piping, brick, metal doors. Just wanted to throw that out there

- After having seen submissions with the electric/light fixture theme worked in, it appears that this doesn't really work too well because it makes us look too much like an actual lighting store. So for future submissions, I would avoid using any lighting imagery for the design of the logo.
I have uploaded three sample jpeg logos I think that is more the direction of what we're going for. I put these rudimentary examples together myself with some help from stock stencils from istockphoto and shutterstock. As you can see all of them incorporate imagery of children playing outside with simple, clean looking font. Whatever these samples inspire you to design, I'm looking forward to seeing where it takes you.
