Creative brief

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:

We need a logo for a new research and education center at Northwestern university; the science focus is Astrophysics, but also with interdisciplinary connections and collaborations with other disciplines (e.g., applied math, computer science, planetary science, materials physics). The center's name is:
Center for Interdisciplinary Education and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA)

We will be focusing on supporting postdoctoral and graduate student research and education -
we are dealing with stars, electromagnetic waves, gravitational waves, computers, telescopes, ...

HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:

What we need is a logo to use on our web sites, letterhead etc. We would like it to become our symbol that will be recognizable by researchers as well as students and the public (through outreach events).

OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:

Very broad;
primarily it is the astronomy and astrophysics research and academic community in the US and across the whole world (we meet at international conferences, we hire researchers and students from all over the world).
but also it is Higher Education administrators, undergraduate students, science writers, the public at large including school teachers and students.

WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:

nothing specific, except it should be hip, maybe somewhat abstract and yet, NOT confusing
or looking as if it has nothing to do with astronomy
incorporating some reference to star (e.g., above the i in CIERA), it could incorporate some kind of wavy feature (but google electromagnetic waves vs gravitational waves, they look different)
Note that to some people CIERA may connect to mountains, but we are located just north of the city of chicago in the midwest of the US - so it's almost a comic reference.

Also, our building is the Dearborn Observatory - see http://www.astro.northwestern.edu/Observatory/d...

WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:

The acronym in some form should be included, so people will learn to associate the log with the acronym CIERA (pronounced sierra)
