Creative brief

The buyer added updates to the brief. Read them.

Business Name

Dangerous Little Books

What do you do?

Independent publisher of rational, secular and atheist non-fiction.

How many pages of illustration do you need?

1

What do you need illustrated?

A Book Cover for CJ Werleman's next book - Crucifying America: How the Religious Right is Destroying our Nation (sub-title to be confirmed)

Does your illustration need to be a particular size?

The book cover is 5 1/2 in x 8 1/2 in (portrait). Resolution should be 300dpi (ideally 600dpi) or higher. The illustration needs to occupy the entire space whilst leaving plenty of copy space for the title: Crucifying America and the author credit: CJ Werleman.

What is your industry?

Publishing and Media

Describe the target audience for your illustration

Atheists, Agnostics, Secularists, Theologians and moderate Religious believers who are worried about superstition-based beliefs eroding personal liberty, stirring up conflict and undermining the constitution. CJ attracts a relatively young (college to early 30s) readership so the style needs to be edgy, shocking and attractive (ie something someone might wear on a tee-shirt)

What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your illustration?

1. Uncle Sam (easily recognizable and representing all that's great about America) Crucified on the Cross.

2. A Patriotic (perhaps based on old war propaganda posters) Color Scheme.

3. The key point is that Democracy, Freedom and Equality are being sacrificed to Censorship, Repression and Divisiveness based on superstitious and often outdated beliefs.

What lillustration styles do you like?

Either a retro/vintage (either graphical with minimal color or idealistic - propaganda-inspired) or edgy urban/art (spray and stencil / grungy) approach would suit the subject, style and audience best.

What colors do you want to see in your illustration?

Red, White and Blue.

What colors do you NOT want to see in your illustration?

No colors are ruled out.

What adjectives should best describe your illustration?

Edgy, Striking, Irreverent, Shocking, Cool, Stark, Dramatic

Where will you use the illustration (print, website, etc.)?

Print and Online (it will be featured on the print and ebook version of the book as well as on websites and other promotional materials)

Do you have additional info or links you'd like to share?

The concept of Uncle Sam on a Cross is something that's central to this brief. If you feel you have another strong illustration concept please contact us first to check that it's acceptable. We wouldn't want you to waste time on a concept that could become unsuitable.

Additionally, as this is a book cover image, copyspace is an important consideration. The illustration doesn't necessarily need to be a full figure piece but it should definitely be instantly recognizable as Uncle Sam and that he's being crucified on a cross.

Here are some links to historical illustrations of Uncle Sam (certain iconic devices - such as his stovepipe hat, goatee beard, stripes and stars are common to all of them):

Brief updates

I forgot to mention when setting the original brief. In addition to the prize a cover credit (with website address if required) will be included prominently on the jacket art and you'll be sent a free signed copy of the book on release.

Just to clarify: we're looking for a strong illustration for a cover (and not a fully formed cover design). So, while we're happy for you to include the title to demonstrate where you've allowed copyspace, the most important element is a strong illustration which must be an image of Uncle Sam (a person) on a crucifix.

Thanks for all the entries so far and keep up the great work!
